About
Activated Alumina

Activated alumina can also be used for air and water filtration purposes, primarily to remove specific gases, contaminants and impurities from the air or water. Activated alumina is a highly porous material made from aluminum oxide. It operates on similar principles to activated carbon filtration but is more effective at adsorbing certain gases and chemical compounds.

Here's how activated alumina air filtration works:

1

Adsorption

Like activated carbon, activated alumina functions through adsorption, where
gases and volatile compounds adhere to its surface. However, activated alumina is
particularly effective at adsorbing polar molecules and can be more selective in its adsorption
capacity.

2

Contaminant Removal

Activated alumina air filters are commonly used to remove contaminants such as acid gases (e.g., hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide), acidic vapors, and certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It can also help control odors by adsorbing odor-causing compounds. In water filtration, as water flows through the activated alumina filter, specific contaminants like fluoride and arsenic are adsorbed onto the surface of the alumina. The adsorption capacity depends on the type and amount of activated alumina used, as well as the specific contaminants present in the air or water.

3

Clean Air Output

Over time, the adsorption capacity of activated alumina can become
saturated. To extend its lifespan and maintain effectiveness, the activated alumina can be regenerated by heating it to remove the adsorbed contaminants. This process restores the material's adsorption capacity, and the regenerated filter can be put back into service.

Applications of
Activated Alumina

1

Wastewater Treatment:

In wastewater treatment plants, activated alumina may be used toremove specific odorous compounds and contaminants from air streams.

2

Fluoride Removal:

Activated alumina is effective at reducing elevated fluoride levels indrinking water, which can be a concern in some regions where natural fluorideconcentrations are high.

3

Indoor Air Quality:

In certain indoor environments where specific pollutants or odors are aconcern, activated alumina air filters can be used in air purification systems.

4

Hospitals/Laboratories:

In healthcare facilities and laboratories, activated aluminafiltration may help maintain clean air quality by removing harmful or odorous gases.

5

Chemical Manufacturing:

It is employed in chemical manufacturing processes to captureand control hazardous gases.

6

Arsenic Removal:

It can also be used to reduce arsenic levels in drinking water, particularlyin areas where groundwater contains arsenic above recommended limits.

7

Desiccant:

Activated alumina is used as a desiccant in various industrial processes toremove moisture from gases and liquids.

8

Catalyst Support:

In addition to filtration, activated alumina is used as a support material forcatalysts in various chemical processes.
