Activated Alumina for Gas Drying & Filtration
Gremarco supplies activated alumina desiccant media designed for gas drying, moisture removal, and specialty filtration applications. With a high surface area porous structure, activated alumina effectively adsorbs water vapor, fluoride, and other contaminants from gas and liquid streams. Our materials are available in engineered formats with custom sizing and converting options to support industrial, environmental, and process filtration systems.
How Activated Alumina Filtration Works
1
Adsorption
Like activated carbon, activated alumina functions through adsorption, where
gases and volatile compounds adhere to its surface. However, activated alumina is
particularly effective at adsorbing polar molecules and can be more selective in its adsorption
capacity.
2
Contaminant Removal
Activated alumina adsorbs acid gases such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide, acidic vapors, and certain volatile organic compounds, and can help control odors by capturing odor-causing compounds. In liquid applications, dissolved contaminants are adsorbed as the stream passes through the media. Adsorption capacity depends on the grade of alumina used and the specific contaminants present.
3
Saturation and Regeneration
Over time, the adsorption capacity of activated alumina can become
saturated. To extend its lifespan and maintain effectiveness, the activated alumina can be regenerated by heating it to remove the adsorbed contaminants. This process restores the material's adsorption capacity, and the regenerated filter can be put back into service.

Applications of Activated Alumina
1
Compressed Air & Gas Drying
Used as a desiccant in industrial processes to remove moisture from gases and liquids, including compressed air drying and process gas dehydration.
2
Drinking Water Treatment
Used to reduce elevated fluoride and arsenic levels in drinking water, particularly where groundwater concentrations exceed recommended limits.
3
Industrial and Chemical Processing
Used to capture and control hazardous gases in chemical manufacturing, and as a support material for catalysts in various chemical processes.
4
Air Quality and Odor Control
Used in air purification systems, healthcare facilities, laboratories, and wastewater treatment plants to remove odorous and harmful gases from air streams.
