How Zeolite Filtration Works

Zeolites work through two mechanisms: adsorption, where contaminants adhere to the vast internal surface area, and cation exchange, where the crystal structure swaps its native ions for charged compounds in the stream. This second mechanism gives zeolite a strong affinity for ammonia and other polar molecules that carbon captures less readily.

Adsorption

Zeolite molecules capture pollutants by attracting and holding them to their surface. Unlike mechanical filtration, adsorption works at the molecular level, making zeolites effective against gases and odors that pass straight through standard particulate filters.

Zeolites are particularly effective at adsorbing ammonia, formaldehyde, and a range of VOCs — some of the most problematic and persistent indoor air pollutants. As contaminants move through the media, these compounds are captured and held within the zeolite's porous structure.
